It’s 2016. In a time when information is spread at the speed of light, and the availability of it is at an all-time high, it has become harder to maintain ours or our children’s innocence. We are exposed to all kinds of things that even 5 years ago would have been beyond the pale, people like Donald Trump, all kinds of war and terrorism, pestilence, violence, political bologna, bullies, cyber-wars…..the list is practically endless.
Pictured above is my new grand-nephew Trenton. His face has restored my hope in humanity. His mom has had a tough time in the past, but she is now in a good place with a great spouse, and having this baby is truly a miracle. His mom’s name is Amy, my sister Barb’s daughter. I love all my nieces and nephews. They are all very special to me. Amy has something about her that makes me want to write. I was reminded by Barb that I wrote a column about her in our local paper when she was born. And now here we are, baby Trenton has arrived, the 7th great-grandchild for my parents. He radiates innocence, a treasure to behold. His parents are going to love this boy so, so much. And his close family are just overjoyed with his arrival.
So I will keep this brief. Trenton, as your grand-uncle, I pledge to love you as much as I can, unconditionally. I will babysit you whenever I can get my hands on you. I promise that I will razz you as much as possible, because it’s in my nature, and let’s face it, my family is like that too. I will allow you to become a Pittsburgh Penguins fan, even though I am a Habs fan, because your uncle Bryan is a mega fan and I am pretty sure he is going to figure prominently in your life. You will always be welcome wherever we are. I can’t shield you from many things because I live an hour away, but I am comforted by the fact that your parents are so awesome and they will raise you to the best of the abilities, which is pretty great.
So sleep well, little one. Many hands are going to be touching you, many arms will clamor to hold you, many lips will press themselves to you for a smooch. You have arrived at a time when our family can use your energy, your innocence, your beauty. I can’t wait to see you.
